• Engineers for a healthy planet
The symbolic slogan of the 5th World Congress of Polish Engineers and the XXVII Congress of Polish Technicians referred to the global challenges faced by the academic and technical community in the modern world. Scholars and practitioners exchanged knowledge and experiences during a three-day session at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice at the end of June this year. They were looking for a recipe for ensuring the sustainable development of the planet, in line with ecological requirements. Senator Jolanta Hibner, a participant in this important event, believes that engineers can do anything, but the use of their ideas and solutions depends primarily on decision-makers and politicians.

  • MEPs on energy transformation
Wind energy will increase Poland's energy security, and its intensive development is an opportunity to increase the share of Polish companies in the supply chain and to create new jobs for those who are employed in the coal sector and its surroundings today. These are the main conclusions of the away meeting of the Parliamentary Team for Energy and Energy and Mining Transformation in Poland with the participation of Ireneusz Zysek - deputy minister of climate and environment and government plenipotentiary for renewable energy sources, which took place at the TAURON Polska Energia wind farm near Piotrków Trybunalski.
  • Out of concern for the environment
More and more local authorities in Poland are taking action to protect the environment. More and more residents are also joining these projects, and they themselves often inspire what problems must necessarily be dealt with, which should be improved to live in a friendly environment for them. Here are some examples of such activities. Rain gardens and improvement of the local water circulation can be a response to climate change and an example of adaptation to the changes taking place. Such a solution is used, among others, in Gdynia, where appropriate plant species have been planted on a specially selected substrate that intercepts rainwater. The water is infiltrated, stored and treated in the ground or container, which allows it to be reused. This is especially important in cities with a lack of permeable surfaces.
  • What is Warsaw doing for the climate?
Warsaw has committed to reducing greenhouse gases by 40 percent. by 2030 and to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 at the latest. The city is already implementing numerous initiatives to help achieve this goal, and ultimately - to combat negative effects and facilitate adaptation to contemporary climate change. Successive greening of the capital Greenery plays a huge role in mitigation and adaptation to climate change. Therefore, it is one of the current priorities of the capital city hall. Warsaw wants to be a true capital of greenery and places great emphasis on planting in urban space. One example is the Nowe Centrum Warszawy project, in which trees, shrubs and other vegetation will appear instead of concrete in many places in the heart of the city.
  • Nature conservation and the local community
We are seeing a steady decline in biodiversity on Earth, despite many plans to stop it. The reason for this is to meet the needs of the population. Meanwhile, many examples prove that the welfare of local communities is closely related to the preservation of nature. Actions taken to preserve natural habitats and species result in an increase in the income of people living in these areas. Costa Rica is the leader among the countries that have focused on the preservation of natural resources and ecotourism. The ecotourism industry offers residents almost twice their monthly income compared to other employment opportunities.

  • Climate protection from A to Z
Climate protection is one of the most urgent needs related to the functioning of our planet. However, in order to properly implement and conduct pro-ecological activities, it is worth knowing the most important concepts related to the environment. The article contains key definitions that will allow you to understand the main assumptions of the currently conducted climate policy.
  • Decarbonization and sustainability of development
In the long term, decarbonization and sustainability of development are almost equivalent, because it is difficult to imagine a smooth functioning of the economy in the conditions of a climate catastrophe. However, due to the collective responsibility inherent in climate protection, effectiveness requires decarbonisation to take place globally, not just regionally. And in the short term, improperly conceived decarbonisation may even threaten this durability.
  • Where is the smog coming from?
From 2030, the ban on the use of coal-fired boilers would apply in cities, and from 2040 also in villages. The Ministry of Climate and Environment is checking the possibility of updating the National Air Protection Program. In Poland, every fourth household in cities uses hard coal for heating.

We are aware of the ongoing climate change, but is the declarative concern for the environment confirmed by individual actions for environmental protection? Let's look at the areas of everyday life to see which of them are the source of appropriate environmental habits and which can still be properly modified for the benefit of our planet.
  • Let's take care of water resources

  • Why do we need thickets in the cities?
The city planners do not leave any free space for the wild vegetation in the city. So it squeezes into itself wherever it can. You can meet her in the most unexpected places of each city. It is rich, it is made up of many species, it is reborn spontaneously and it still works for us. The wildlife in the city is not yet properly appreciated by us, which is a pity. • Occupational health and safety in plant protection as an element of good practices in agriculture
Every year, many cases of accidents at work and occupational diseases of farmers are reported to regional branches and local offices of the Agricultural Social Insurance Fund (KRUS). For many years, there has been a downward trend in such events, although they have increased again since 2021. Contact with chemical plant protection products can be particularly dangerous for people working in agriculture. It should be emphasized that the situation in this respect has improved significantly, because in accordance with the provisions of Art. 41 of the Act of March 8, 2013 on plant protection products, treatments with plant protection products intended for professional users may only be performed by people who have completed training in the use of plant protection products. Such activities will help to better protect the health and life of people performing protective treatments and those exposed to contact with plant protection products. Building awareness and responsibility as well as appropriate attitudes in agricultural activity, especially in plant protection, are Code of Good Agricultural Practice, Guide to Good Plant Protection Practice and the Code of Good Practice for Plant Protection Organizations.
